Topic: Shabbat
Because Alaska has very irregular daylight hours, we light our candles at 6:30 on Erev Shabbat and have havdallah at 5:00 on Saturday. This seems to work out pretty well. Other options are to follow the sunset times in Jerusalem or to go ahead and keep the AK sunset schedule regardless of the inconvenience. The only qualm I have have with keeping Shabbat with AK time is that in the summer we will have Erev Shabbat at 11:30 pm and in the winter ar 3:30 pm. This doesn't seem practical for our work and eating schedules. I don't think there is any hard and fast, agreead upon stance on this issue. We have to come to our own convictions. We should each be prayerful about this however, and honor God in our personal decision.
